Letters From Carole

Carole wrote countless letters to her friends and fans. Some of these letters were handwritten and others were typed on her personalized stationary. Carole had a secretary named Nan Stuart but she answered most of her fan mail herself. Here are twelve rare letters from my collection -

(Dated February 22, 1938) Dear Mrs. Eddy: Many thanks for your nice card, and the nice wishes. It was nice to receive a card from Oakland as I used to live in San Francisco. May I extend my most sincere wishes to you for much happiness. Sincerely, Carole Landis

(Dated June 3, 1943) Dear Gloria: This is being written between a flurry of appointments but I had to tell you how grand your letter was. "Wintertime" is finished and I have been busy with appearances at the Army camps and Naval bases for the past two weeks. Tonight I am to speak for the Red Cross and tomorrow, by way of a change, I shall be on the Groucho Marx program. Your are quite right, Gloria. I do write my own letters to you. When I am very rushed, I dictate them to Nan and then sign them, but I answer them all personally. As yet I have no news of my next picture, but I hope I can tell you something definite about it when I write again. Sincere best wishes, Carole Landis

(Letter to Rudy Valee dated August 7, 1938) Dear Rudy: I've signed for the play and I'm leaving for New York Aug. 12 and will arrive the morning of the 16th. I'll be at the Belvedere Hotel. When you come back to New York please call me. I hope it will be soon; Carole Landis

(Dated June 23, 1944) Dear Gloria: Just this minute returned from location and will at last answer your grand letters. For a time I was afraid that "Having Wonderful Crime" would run over schedule, and interfere with my forthcoming South Pacific tour, but we are caught up now, and I expect to leave soon. Have had most of my shots and everything. About "Four Jills In A Jeep", the story as written in the book is the true one, Gloria. The picture is a film story, and not true to life. No more news for now, but do write back very soon. Carole Landis

(Dated May 1, 1947) Dear Gloria: Thanks ever so much for the lovely letter and for the beautiful photo. I hope the band job works out for you, Gloria. It sounds excellent. Am having a wonderful vacation, though I'm busier than ever fixing up the house with my husband. We just got two tiny kittens and they are simply precious. Haven't had much news for now but understand Eagle-Lion is please with "Out of the Blue." 'Bye for now, and do write soon, All the best, Carole Landis

(Dated July 26, 1945) 20th Century Fox Studios Beverly Hills, Calif. Payroll Dept. Dear Sirs - From this date forward will you please send my weekly pay-check to Chemical Bank & Trust Co. Madison Ave. at 74th Street New York 21, N.Y. Att. Mr. Hopper. Thank you very much for your courtesy in this matter. Sincerely, Carole Landis

(Written in 1943) Dear Miss Glennon: Thanks so much for your sweet letter. As you know it is very unwise to advise anyone in whether or not to come to Hollywood - however it is surely one of the most difficult cities in which to become established. I'm enclosing a snapshot for your album. Sincere best wishes, Carole Landis

(Written in 1945) Dear Elsa: Just a quick note between shows to thank you for your grand letters. I'll have Nan check with Helen about those lists for you; in case you haven't received them. "Lady Says Yes" has opened and seems to be doing pretty well. Will be on Earl Wilson's program next week, also Paula Stone's. Am terribly behind in my mail, - we've been so rushed - but hope to write lots more next time. Loads of luck, Carole P.S. Some of the songs I sing are "Men, Men, Men" and "Without a Caress". Am sending your picture separately, dear.

(Dated November 1, 1946) Dear Ruth and Jean: Thanks for your very sweet letter. I'm sending the photographs to you separately and do hope you will like them. I was born in Fairchild, Wisconsin, on January 1st, 1919. You ask how many pictures I make a year - the answer is, - no set number. It varies. I'm not making a picture now and probably won't start one till after the first of the year. The name of my dog is Donner. My hobby is collecing Chinese figurines. Thanks again, and do write soon, won't you? Best wishes, Carole Landis

(Written in 1942) Dear James: Well, "Manila Calling" is almost finished + my hopes are still high that I may get to make a tour of the Army camps before another picture gets under way. I am now an Air Raid Warden in addition to my other duties and working with a wonderfully cooperative group of people. Regards, Carole Landis

(Dated August 25, 1942) Dear James: Just returned from a tour of the Army camps in Texas and had a most wonderful time. I was away about three weeks and appeared at Fort Bliss, Corpus Christi, Camp Wallace, Camp Bowie, and other Texas camps. Am starting work this week on "The Powers Girl" and am very happy about it. Priscilla Lane and George Murphy are appearing in the picture. It has been so nice hearing from you and I hope you will write very soon again. Sincere best wishes,
Carole Landis

(Postcard written in 1943) Dear James Pattarini: The "X-Ray" hasn't come in yet, but your grand letter has, and since I am leaving on a camp tour in a few moments I want to thank you for your helpful suggestions anent radio. I am to be on again, by the way, on the 35th and on July 5, both times on Vox Pop, and the Groucho Marx Show on July 10. I'll be back in town on the 25th and hope to find the "X-Ray" here then and to be able to write you about the article. Best Wishes, Carole Landis
